  • About 2025 April's Author: Alejandra Banca

Alejandra Banca studied literature at Andrés Bello University in Caracas. Fleeing Venezuela’s collapse, she emigrated to Spain and lives in Barcelona. Her poetry has appeared in various anthologies. From Savagery is her first book.

And this event is organized by Girl Gone International, an international group of women (one million+ members) who are all anglophone expats living around the world in various cities. Each city has a GGI book club where members meet regularly to discuss their local book club pick. There are GGI groups in Barcelona, Madrid, and elsewhere in Spain.

GGI's founder, Anne Scott, lives in the Balearics. She grew up as the daughter of a well-known bookstore owner in Scotland. When she became an expat for the first time in Venezuela (2014), she started GGI as a source of community and support. The organisation has grown exponentially with book clubs at its core for in-person events.

This year, after the success of the local book clubs, GGI is launching its first ever global book club events. Three books are selected per year, with in-person and online events for each global pick. The series begins in April.
After a months-long selection process to find the title that represents the membership best, FROM SAVAGERY by Alejandra Banca has been chosen as the first GGI global book club pick. Obviously this is extremely exciting!

    Praise for FROM SAVAGERY:
“Electric, defiant, and singing with melancholia, Banca’s devastating debut throws its arms around a displaced generation of young Venezuelan migrants, revelling in the clamour and beauty of their day-by-day survival.” —Latin American Literature Today

“Banca’s characters grab you by the heart. Visceral, unflinching, ferocious, unashamed—an important and much-needed entry to the world’s literature.” —Jade Song, author of Chlorine

“FROM SAVAGERY is not only a book, it’s a global situation . . . Alejandra Banca is brave!” —Jan Queretz, Casapaís

Come In and explore the lives of the expats through the eyes of Alejandra Banca.
